An Evening with Freda Payne
Legendary Jazz, Soul and R&B Singer Freda Payne will perform at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 10 at the Flagstar Strand Theatre for the Performing Arts in Downtown Pontiac. Tickets on sale this Friday, April 14 at 10 a.m.
Born in Detroit, the multi-faceted Payne is best known for singing career during the mid–1960s through the mid–1980s. She will be inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame with a ceremony in Detroit on June 11 for her contributions in music. Her most notable record is her 1970 hit single, Band of Gold.
The ’90s saw Payne return to music, with album releases such as An Evening with Freda Payne and Christmas with Freda & Friends. In 2001 Payne released an all-new album, Come See About Me on the Volt label. Payne joined Kanye West, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Barbra Streisand and many more on We Are The World for Haiti Relief in 2010 and in June 2014, she released a jazz-influenced studio album entitled Come Back to Me Love, on the Mack Avenue label, which was produced by Bill Cunliffe and was a highly-acclaimed jazz album which featured big band arrangements and strings.
In addition to her music career, Payne has an enjoyed an extensive career as an actress in Broadway musicals and in film. Her Broadway credits, include: Hallelujah Baby, Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies, Ain’t Misbehaving, The Blues in the Night, Jelly’s Last Jam as well as A Change Is Gonna Come, The Divorce written and directed by Donald B. Welch, which is also on DVD. Payne will also be seen in the film Kinky which is set to be release in 2017. Payne’s film and TV resume includes roles in such movies as Private Obsession, Sprung, Ragdoll, the 2000 comedy Nutty Professor II: The Klumps starring Eddie Murphy and the made-for-TV movie Fire & Ice. In 2009, she appeared on American Idol, performing her most iconic song, Band of Gold.
